International Day of Democracy
Democracy is a state where people have freedom of speech, tolerance and acceptance. It paves a way for development. Through democracy there is equity in resource allocation, political stability and freedom of religion. These are some of the pressing issues regarding democracy of which we believe should be resolved. World Assembly of Youth (WAY) speaks of inter-ethnic respect, international understanding and cooperation, tolerance and national liberation and democracy. At WAY we believe, promote and uphold all these attributes.
On this day we seek to participate in promoting democracy in every way possible and by having a sense of responsibility especially towards the youth. That is to protect their rights and be their voice where necessary. Ever since the establishment of WAY, we have held events and activities including discussions, conferences and press conferences involving keynote speakers, often those who are leaders or educators involved in supporting and endorsing democratic governments and communities.
On this day, the organization encourages communities together with governments to strengthen democracy because through it international peace, tolerance and freedom can be attained. The youth should stand up for Parliamentary democracy, voting power and involvement in decision making in their organizations and society as a whole. All
should advocate for good governance by fighting against corruption, implementation of human rights and equality and for decent living standards. The celebrations for the day should be marked with genuine tranquility, freedom of expression and tolerance for all people, religion and social class hence leaving people feeling a sense of pride to be part of their communities that uphold such a universal value.
This virtue is a challenge but it can be achieved through the support of intergovernmental democracy movements and everyone?s participative role in strengthening it. Let us embrace the journey that the youth have paved, and continue to do so, for democracy.
